Two school pupils in Hullbridge have won a banner design competition to promote site safety at Barratt and David Wilson Homes’ High Elms Park community.
The leading developer enlisted the help of the pupils at Riverside Primary School to try and warn other children about the dangers of playing near building sites during the summer holidays.
Brooke Hurry (10) and Lucie Elliot (10) were crowned the winners of the competition for their artistic poster designs, which were transformed into large-scale banners and installed at the Lower Road development.
The use of bright colours and important site safety messaging earned the pupils a £25 book token each and the chance to see their posters brought to life onsite.
Claire Smith, Headteacher at Riverside Primary School, said: “We are proud that both girls have managed to create a piece of art work which is bold, bright and engaging whilst sharing very important messages about site safety. They are a credit to Riverside Primary School.”
Brooke and Lucie were invited to High Elms Park to meet with one of the Site Managers, Alex Bott, once their banners were in place.
Annette Hurst, Sales Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties, said: “Our High Elms Park development is predominantly family orientated so it is very important to us to promote the dangers of playing on a building site, especially during the summer holidays.
“Many children might not realise the hazards presented by building sites and perceive it as a fun and exciting place to play, especially when spending more time at home.
“That is certainly not the case and we are very grateful to Brooke and Lucie for helping us to raise awareness and hopefully discourage children from entering building sites unattended.”
Brooke’s design, in place on the Barratt Homes side of the community, identified the PPE required to attend a construction site, in addition to significant warning notices such as “Caution: Children keep out.”
On the David Wilson Homes side is Lucie’s creation, which outlined the potential hazards and instructed no-one should enter the site without authorised access.
High Elms Park is located in a close-knit community and will feature a collection of two to five bedroom properties.
