On 21 July, students and their families joined staff at The Cavendish School, Cambridgeshire’s first and only state-maintained special free school for young people with autism, to celebrate the end of their first ever Summer term at the school.
The Summer Activity Day was the culmination of a programme of events that took place in July, which celebrated students’ achievements from the academic year. Students enjoyed a series of games and sensory activities designed for individuals with autism, including bouncy obstacle course, football shootouts and cup stacking.
The Summer activity day was also an opportunity for parents and family members to meet other members of the autism community and explore the school’s purpose-built campus, which opened in January 2022. Since opening in September 2021, the school has welcomed 60 autistic students from across Cambridgeshire. 20 new students will join this school this September.
Stephanie Smith, Deputy Head at The Cavendish School, said: “We are so pleased that so many of our students’ parents, carers and guardians were able to join us for our Summer Activity Day. I am tremendously proud of the community that we have built here at the school and the day was a fantastic opportunity to come together to celebrate our students’ achievements throughout the last academic year. I am looking forward to welcoming our next cohort of students, and their families, to the school in September!”
