Thrill-seekers raised a fantastic £2,572 for the Chilterns branch of the Wooden Spoon rugby charity during a go karting evening held at Absolutely Karting in Maidenhead on Tuesday 19th October.
Eleven teams, each made up of five drivers aged 14 and above, took part in the Le Mans-style endurance race. As well as showcasing driving skills, the teams had to have race strategy by switching drivers at regular intervals. The race was won by the Maids U15 Racers who were representing Maidenhead Rugby Club and completed 105 laps of the track during the 90-minute race. A team from the rugby club also finished in second place.
Wooden Spoon funds life-changing projects that support children and young adults who have disabilities or are disadvantaged. Since the charity was founded in 1983, it has funded over 1,300 projects across the UK, which have recently included donations to Berkshire Youth for its Waterside Centre in Newbury, Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice to help it create an accessible bedroom, and Thames Valley Adventure Playground so it can update its toilets and changing facilities.
Ray Hague, from Wooden Spoon Chilterns, commented:
“Thank you to everyone who attended the evening and helped us raise a great amount of money. All the teams had so much fun and the event was fantastically arranged by the Absolutely Karting team; their support is greatly appreciated. It was such a success that it will become an annual event.
“The £2,572 raised during the evening will really help us to continue to fund protects throughout the region that benefit our community.”
Matt Schofield, Venue Manager at Absolutely Karting Maidenhead, added:
“The Wooden Spoon charity recently funded two specialist twin-seat karts that were donated to us and our sister company Rogue Leisure in Aylesbury. The karts allow children and young adults who have additional needs to enjoy the thrill of go-karting, so we were delighted to be able to support the charity by providing the venue for them to raise funds. It was a great evening and congratulations to the winning team.”
