To celebrate Storytelling Day (20th March), local housebuilder Barratt David Wilson Homes has donated 32 copies of the popular Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book to children at Kingsbrook View Primary Academy. The school is located at Barratt David Wilson North Thames’ Kingsbrook development in Aylesbury, home to The Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery.

For 36 years of his life Roald Dahl, the author of the book, lived in the Buckinghamshire village of Great Missenden, a 20 minute drive away from the school. It is here he wrote most of his world famous children’s books. Along with the donation, the housebuilder created a display for children to interact with. Food and drinks are a key part of Roald Dahl’s books and are at the centre of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. The display reflected this by transforming the Barratt show home garden into a candy land, featuring large chocolate cakes, candy canes and other sweets.

First celebrated in the UK in 1995, World Book Day is a charity event held annually on the first Thursday in March. On this day, every child in full-time education in the UK is given a voucher to be spent on books. The event is the local manifestation of the original, global World Book Day organised by UNESCO to promote reading, and publishing.

Karly Williams, Sales and Marketing Director for Barratt David Wilson North Thames, commented: “Ahead of World Book Day this year, we wanted to celebrate Aylesbury’s rich literary history and pay homage to the popular author Roald Dahl through a book donation and a larger than life display at Kingsbrook. We hope the pupils enjoy their brand new books which will support their curriculum this year.”

Jon Turner, Headteacher at Kingsbrook View Primary Academy, commented: “Roald Dahl’s books are brilliant at encouraging creativity and imagination, so it has been wonderful to work with Barratt David Wilson North Thames on this project. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has been added to our curriculum and the children are really looking forward to discovering Charlie’s world this World Book Day thanks to this kind donation.”

Kingsbrook View Primary Academy opened in September 2021 and is located within Barratt David Wilson North Thames Kingsbrook development in Aylesbury. Once complete, the development will feature a wealth of green space, including green open spaces, play areas and a 250 acre nature reserve.
