Absolutely Karting in Maidenhead made the dreams of a local man come true when it gave him the chance to enjoy go karting recently.
Twenty-four-year-old Kilford Dziva from Thatcham has cerebral palsy and has always wanted to try karting. The experience was organised by Absolutely Together, a charity that gives children and young adults who have additional needs the chance to experience leisure activities for free. Kilford used one of the specially adapted twin-seat karts that Absolutely Together had donated to Absolutely Karting.
The kart enabled Kilford to take charge of the steering, whilst an Absolutely Karting instructor handled the pedals.
Kilford commented:
“I loved the whole experience. It was so enjoyable to feel the speed and it was definitely an adrenaline rush, especially when going round the sharp corners. I’ve always wanted to have the chance to drive a car, and go karting is the closest I have had to doing that. I feel this experience can potentially help improve my independence with driving.
“I don’t let my disability stop me from achieving my goals and I enjoy taking part in sports, going to the gym and being active. After lockdown I wanted to introduce new activities into my life, so thanks Absolutely Karting for helping me do this. I hope to be able to enjoy go karting on a regular basis and eventually learn to control the kart myself.”
Kilford also enjoys cooking and being independent in the kitchen is another goal of his. He aims to create videos about cooking to inspire others to overcome the difficulties that can come with living with a disability.
Matt Schofield, Venue Manager at Absolutely Karting in Maidenhead, added:
“We were thrilled to be able to help Kilford achieve one of his goals and we’re delighted that he enjoyed the experience. This is exactly what our twin-seat karts are there for – giving people who have additional needs the chance to enjoy an activity that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to do. We’d love to welcome Kilford back to the track and help him to improve his skills.”
Every Saturday morning Absolutely Karting provides free access to its track to families who have children and young adults with additional needs so they can make use of the two twin-seat karts and take part in an activity together. The sessions are organised by Absolutely Together and people simply need to email smiles@absolutely-group.co.uk to book a space.
