Housebuilder Barratt David Wilson Homes and the Royal Society Protection of Birds (RSPB) has won the ‘Best Housing Partnership’ award at the prestigious British Homes Awards for its collaboration at the housebuilder’s Kingsbrook development in Aylesbury. The British Homes Awards’ panel of expert judges, who all work within key areas of the building industry, awarded the partnership the overall winner, recognising the role that nature plays at the heart of the new homes development.
Barratt Developments has a long established partnership with the RSPB, the UK’s largest nature conservation charity, to ensure that wildlife can thrive alongside new residents at its developments for the benefit of all. Throughout the entire planning process at Kingsbrook, Barratt David Wilson North Thames has worked closely with the RSPB to consider the needs of wildlife at every step of the way throughout the entire development.
Adrian Thomas, the Kingsbrook project manager for the RSPB, said, “With nature in crisis, we set out to see if a major housebuilder could significantly raise the bar for making new developments wildlife-friendly. Barratt David Wilson has really stepped up to the mark, and we’re so pleased to see that commitment being recognised.”
Karly Williams, Sales and Marketing Director at Barratt David Wilson North Thames, commented: “Our unique partnership with the RSPB at Kingsbrook has really given us a chance to do something we’ve never done on this scale before – and we’re incredibly proud of what we are achieving. The whole team is absolutely thrilled that all the years of hard work are paying off and that the British Homes Awards has recognised how special this partnership and the development is.”
Kingsbrook is an exceptional development of 2,500 quality new homes, with over 60% of the development dedicated to green infrastructure; including ecological enhancement in the form of wildflower meadows, woodlands, parks, allotments, fruit trees, a community orchard, a lake, miles of new hedges with native plants and a sustainable drainage system which creates wildlife-rich waterways. Construction started in 2016 and the vision for the development will be fully realised by 2026.
As part of the forward-thinking partnership, the housebuilder has also designed each show home garden at the development to a gold or silver standard as set out by the RSPB. This includes the incorporation of bird boxes; hedgehog homes and highways, so that wildlife can travel safely between gardens; bee hotels and dead wood features, to provide a home for insects and solitary bees; and composting facilities. Many of these features can also be found throughout the development and really bring together the vision set out by the partnership.
Kingsbrook is one of the flagship elements of the Barratt Developments and RSPB partnership, which also saw the RSPB’s Nature On Your Doorstep campaign launched at the housebuilders developments across the country earlier this year. The campaign is aimed at encouraging everyone across the country to turn their gardens and local green spaces into havens for wildlife and people alike.
