Simply Ice Cream awarded southern artisan food award

Ashford-based Simply Ice Cream has been awarded an artisan food award by food and drink journalist and broadcaster Nigel Barden and premium cooking appliance manufacturer Britannia.

Set up fifteen years ago by Sally Newall, Simply Ice Cream has created a range of ice creams that are made using natural locally sourced ingredients, home-made flavours and are free from additives or preservatives. All of the ice cream is still made the old-fashioned way, by hand in small batches.

Rodda’s in Cornwall took second place with its Cornish Clotted Cream. And Sol-kiki, in Sherborne, Dorset, was awarded third place for its dairy free Yirga-cheffe Coffee Chocolate Bar, made from Ethiopian coffee, redskin peanuts and white chocolate.

Nigel Barden commented on the winning producer: ‘’Simply Ice Cream’s Stem Ginger & Marmalade ice-cream is a lusciously rich mouthful, containing 50% double cream, cut through by a grown-up hit of stem ginger and Seville orange rich marmalade. Both ingredients provide a discernible texture, that’s pleasantly chewable. This excellent ice cream is indicative of what a fine business Simply Ice Cream has turned into, producing products as consistently tasty as this.”

Jane Rylands, Head of Marketing Communications for Britannia, said: “We’re thrilled with the volume of entries we’ve had from the South where we’ve been proud to host the Britannia Artisan Food Collection. From craft cider and beer to dairies, delis and bistros, we’ve uncovered some hidden gems and hope people visit our map to discover the artisanal delights we’ve been lucky enough to find.”

The Britannia Artisan Food Collection launched at the end of last year in Wales. The public was invited to nominate artisan food producers from across the country. A shortlist was chosen by Nigel Barden and awarded a place on Britannia’s Artisan Food Collection map, before a top three were chosen and a winner awarded.

The South was the third was the second of six countries and regions the Britannia Artisan Food Collection will visit.
