Having a top floor is a dream for many house hunters and a new survey from Barratt and David Wilson Homes has revealed the ways in which Essex homebuyers would use the space if they owned a three storey property.

The survey, conducted by the five star developer*, disclosed that residents in the county would use their top floor for a games room, with another bedroom also being a considered use for the space.

Make a games room

25% of homebuyers in Essex said that they would embrace the fun side of owning their own property and would use their top floor to create a games room.

Sure to be a hit with children in the home, a games room is a fantastic place for family to spend time together or for friends to hang out in the evenings.

The spare room could be filled with traditional arcade games, a dartboard, a pool table or even a video game setup, in order to make sure people have an area to relax and enjoy their favourite activities.

Annette Hurst, Sales Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties, said: “It’s no surprise to see residents in Essex wanting to use the top floor for a games room as being able to unwind after a demanding day is crucial to ensure good mental health and progress with personal and professional development.

“The last year or so has been particularly hard for many and playing games takes your mind off of any worries to maintain positivity.”

Create another bedroom

25% of homebuyers in Essex said that they would use the top floor to create another bedroom.

If the little ones are growing up fast and are desperate for their own room instead of sharing with their siblings, an extra bedroom could be a great addition to the top floor of a property to encourage imaginative play. Alternatively, using the top floor for the principal bedroom could provide a space away from the children to relax and unwind after a long day.

Annette Hurst, Sales Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties, said: “Privacy in the home is a big factor to consider for families moving home as you don’t want to be on top of each other.

“Having their own bedroom could give children their first taste of independence and responsibility in addition to limiting the amount of toys left around the house.

Make a guest bedroom

26% of homebuyers in Essex said that they would create a guest bedroom on the top floor.

A housewarming party is the perfect opportunity to welcome friends and family to your new home. A guest bedroom available for them to stay in will allow the celebrations to continue until late.

Annette Hurst, Sales Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties, said: “Our properties in Essex are ideal to host for guests with open plan kitchens and spacious living rooms, perfect for guests to mingle and enjoy the ample space whilst socialising.

“Purchasing a new home is all about sharing the occasion with loved ones and a guest room provides that comforting home-away-from-home feel.”
