The beauty of golf, particularly in the majors, is that you never quite know who will come out on top. Despite his record across all four of golf’s biggest tournaments, few could have predicted that Tiger Woods would have won the Masters last year – his first major title for 11 years. Similarly, this year, who would have thought that Collin Morikawa would grab that maiden major victory? Or that Bryson DeChambeau with just one top-10 finish in a major, would win the US Open?
For golf or betting fans that will search on Google “Masters golf odds”, it’s important to look beyond the leading favourites, or even past those who are in exceptional form. The demands of a major tournament always mean there’s added pressure and there’s no doubt that anyone that takes to the field will be dreaming of being presented with the green jacket. So, let’s take a look at some of the names who may not be fancied in the market, but could be worth a punt at Augusta National.
Xander Schauffele (14/1)
The American is the joint-fifth favourite for this year’s tournament, and he finished T2 last year, just one stroke behind Woods. Schauffele will be looking to win his first major tournament, and although he’s racked up seven top-10 finishes across the majors’ circuit, he also has four PGA Tour victories under his belt already. Schauffele has been in decent form these last few months, recently finishing second in the CJ Cup. Should he produce another good performance in the Zozo Cup, there’s no doubt his odds will shorten. He’s one to watch, for sure.
Collin Morikawa (25/1)
Could Morikawa cause another shock and win a second major title this year? He only turned professional in 2019, and since then has won 3 PGA Tours, including the Championship in August. Currently ranked fourth in the world, his best position to date, he may be making his Masters debut at Augusta, but don’t let that fool you. He makes golf look easy, his effortless strokes just keeping things simple. Morikawa recently revealed he won’t be making a scouting trip to Augusta, but in the form he’s in, it’d be silly not to back him.
Matthew Wolff (33/1)
Wolff is another golfer to have only turned professional last year, and will be competing in his maiden Masters tournament next month. But with a PGA win under his belt, and decent showings in the other two majors this year (a T4 finish in the PGA Championship, and second at the US Open), Wolff has slowly climbed the world rankings and currently sits 12th. There’s no doubt he will break into the top-10 before too long, and a good performance in the Zozo Cup could see his stock rise.
Justin Rose (50/1)
Despite always being up there amongst the favourites or ones to watch in all of the four major tournaments, Rose only has one title to his name, the US Open, back in 2013. When he’s on the top of his game, he’s unstoppable, but when things aren’t going well, they really are bad – there’s no middle ground. The former world number 1 has slipped out of the PGA world top-20 with a number of disappointing showings since the US Open, where Rose finished ninth. There’s no doubt there’s still some good shots in him, but he’s in a pretty shoddy slump right now. A good performance at the Zozo Cup might be enough to brush away those cobwebs.
